Overview
Nesodillo arcangellii 'Shiro Utsuri' is one of the most visually striking beginner isopods available today. Named after the Shiro Utsuri koi — meaning "black and white" in Japanese — this species displays a bold dalmatian-like pattern of black blotches over a white to off-white semi-translucent base. Originally introduced to the hobby as Cubaris sp. 'Shiro Utsuri', it is now properly classified in the Nesodillo genus. Active, curious, and hardy, it is an excellent choice for new and experienced keepers alike.
Habitat & Setup
Substrate mix: For best results, use Isopod Paradise Organic Substrate specifically formulated to support healthy colonies. If you would rather mix your own, we recommend a blend of 70% organic topsoil, 10% flake soil, 10% milled sphagnum moss, 8% organics(mushroom compost, earthworm castings and leaf litter) and 2% calcium
Hides & decor: Bark tubes and flats, leaf litter layer, moss patches, coco huts, lotus pods. Cuttlebone for calcium source.
Moisture: Consistently lightly damp throughout. Avoid fully saturated or dry conditions. A small moisture gradient is ideal.
Diet & Feeding
Omnivorous detritivores with a hearty appetite. Varied diet with regular protein and a constant calcium source. Easy feeders — one of the most forgiving species in the hobby.

- Freeze-dried shrimp or fish flakes
- Powder formulas like Isopod Chow, Repashy Morning Wood, Bug Burger, etc.
- Soft rotting wood and decaying plant matter
Feeding frequency: Rotate foods on a weekly basis. Remove leftover food when food begins to mold.
Breeding & Lifecycle
Moderate and steady breeders. Sexually mature at around 3 months. A healthy colony will establish reliably with consistent care — rewarding and not difficult to grow.
Mancae care: Juveniles are hardy and do not require special conditions beyond maintaining consistent humidity and fine food at substrate level. Springtails recommended as cleanup crew.
Colony tips: Active foragers; you will often see them out during the day as well as at night.
The name 'Shiro Utsuri' comes directly from a Japanese koi fish variety known for its striking black-and-white pattern — and the resemblance is unmistakable. These isopods were originally classified as a Cubaris species before genetic work placed them in the Nesodillo genus.
