Overview
Porcellio dilatatus — the Giant Canyon Isopod — is a wide-bodied, robust species from western Europe. They are popular bioactive cleanup crew members and feeder insects for reptiles due to their high reproductive rate and robust size. Its bulky, broad build and mottled gray-brown coloration make it visually distinctive, and its enthusiastic burrowing behavior creates intricate tunnel systems throughout the substrate. Widely considered the go-to feeder isopod for bearded dragons, it is equally at home as a hardworking bioactive cleanup crew in reptile and amphibian enclosures.
Habitat & Setup
Substrate mix: For best results, use Isopod Paradise Organic Substrate specifically formulated to support healthy colonies. If you would rather mix your own, we recommend a blend of 70% organic topsoil, 10% flake soil, 10% milled sphagnum moss, 8% organics(mushroom compost, earthworm castings and leaf litter) and 2% calcium
Hides & decor: Bark, rotting hardwood pieces, generous leaf litter layer. They spend significant time underground, so surface hides are used for transitional shelter. Cuttlebone for calcium source.
Moisture: Moisture gradient with one-third damp and two-thirds dry. Drought tolerant but needs a reliably moist retreat zone for molting. Add springtails to manage mold from heavy organic activity.
Diet & Feeding
Strong, wide-ranging feeders with a good appetite. They process leaf litter, rotting wood, and organic debris readily. Protein supplementation weekly maintains colony health and supports rapid reproduction.

Feeding frequency: Rotate foods on a weekly basis. Remove leftover food when food begins to mold. Leaf litter and rotting wood can be left in permanently as a continuous food source.
Breeding & Lifecycle
Good breeders once established. Females carry developing young in a marsupium and give live birth to mancae. Breeding is encouraged by warm temperatures and consistent food availability. Males and females engage in visible courtship behavior including antennal tapping.
Mancae care: Juveniles emerge as miniature adults and immediately begin burrowing. Offer fine protein powder and small leaf litter fragments on the substrate surface for the first few weeks.
Colony tips: Larger starting groups of 25–40 establish faster. Gravid females are noticeably wider than males. Avoid overcrowding — split cultures when density is high to maintain optimal breeding conditions.
Porcellio dilatatus creates elaborate subterranean tunnel networks that aerate substrate and improve drainage — making them uniquely valuable in bioactive builds where deep substrate health matters as much as surface cleanup.
